Asbestos Exposure on Ships:

USS ALLEN DD 66 DESTROYER

USS Allen (DD-66) was a Sampson-class destroyer of the United States Navy and the second Navy ship named for Lieutenant William Henry Allen, a naval officer during the War of 1812. The warship was the longest serving destroyer on the Naval Vessel Register when she was sold in 1946. Allen was laid down on 10th May 1915 at Bath Maine, by the Bath Iron Works, launched on 5th December 1916 and commissioned on 24th January 1917, Lieutenant Commander Samuel W. Bryant in command. The destroyer operated for a brief period of time in World War I, doing mostly escort missions. During the Inter-War Period, Allen spent most of her time being out of commission and as a training platform. At the start of World War II, the warship was reassigned to the Pacific Fleet as a unit of Destroyer Division 80. Allen began escorting duty between islands of the Hawaiian chain and patrolling the area for enemy ships, primarily submarines. A primary training function of Allen during this period was to work-up new submarine crews in penetrating ASW defensive positions, with her acting as the defender. In September 1945, the destroyer steamed from Hawaii to Philadelphia, where she was placed out of commission on 15th October 1945. Allen earned only one battle star for World War II service, but was the longest-serving destroyer in the U.S. Navy. Some technical details:

  • Weight 1225 tons in full load
  • Length 315 feet
  • Speed 29.5 knots
