USS AMMEN DD 527 DESTROYER

USS Ammen (DD-527), a Fletcher-class destroyer, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for Rear Admiral Daniel Ammen. It was launched on 17th September 1942, sponsored by Miss Eva Ammen and commissioned on 20th March 1943, Commander John C. Daniel in command. This destroyer took part in operations, in major wars, in the following locations: Alaska, March-November 1943; New Guinea, November 1943-September 1944; Philippines, October-December 1944; and Okinawa, March-June 1945. Ammen sailed back to San Diego on 14 October 1957, after the war operations ended and, after post-deployment stand down, resumed normal 1st Fleet operations along the California coast. At the end of February 1959, the destroyer began her overhaul at San Francisco, and then resumed active duty. Early in October, the destroyer embarked upon the final western Pacific deployment of her career. On 19th July 1960, while making the transit between Seal Beach and San Diego for decommissioning, Ammen was struck by USS Collett. She was initially towed into Long Beach and, later, from there to San Diego where she was decommissioned on 15th September 1960. The warship’s name was struck from the Navy List on 1st October 1960 and she was sold to the National Metal and Steel Corporation on 20th April 1961 for scrapping. Ammen earned eight battle stars during World War II. Her main characteristics are:
