Asbestos Exposure on Ships:

USS ANTHONY DD 515 DESTROYER

This ship was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for Marine Sergeant Major William Anthony and a Fletcher-class destroyer. It was launched on 20th December 1942, sponsored by Miss Alice Anthony and Miss Frances Anthony, granddaughters of Sergeant Major William Anthony. The destroyer was commissioned at the Boston Navy Yard, on 26th February 1943, with Lieutenant Commander Blinn Van Mater in command. In 1943, USS Anthony (DD-515) was among the destroyers that escorted troop transports to the Solomon Islands for landings on Bougainville and despite numerous air attacks she escaped unharmed. On 8th July 1944, the warship began providing harassing fire on Guam and later that month assumed antisubmarine patrol duty. Anthony arrived on station off Okinawa on 27th March 1945, and began preparing for the upcoming invasion. After the end of the war, the destroyer was loaned to the Federal Republic of Germany, in 1958, and was struck from the Navy’s list on 15th April 1972. The ship was then sold to West Germany on 27th June 1972 for cannibalization and scrapping and was stricken in 1976. She was sunk as torpedo target in the Mediterranean on 16th May 1979. Anthony earned seven battle stars for World War II service, and was awarded a Navy Unit Commendation for heroism during the Okinawa campaign. Some of the destroyer’s technical details were:

  • Weight 2050 tons
  • Length 376 feet
  • Propulsion generating 60 000 horse power and two propellers
  • Complement of 329 men

Asbestos on the USS Anthony Caused Diseases

USS Anthony was one of those U.S. Navy ships with asbestos materials on board. These materials were used to insulate and fireproof these „asbestos ships”. Tiny fibers and particles could have been released into the air, and any crew member or officer could have swallowed or inhaled them. The fact that asbestos used in building materials, could be dangerous, was unknown back then, and this why they were used on a large scale. Long time exposure to asbestos could lead to serious heath problems and diseases.
