USS AULT DD 698 DESTROYER

This ship was Allen M. Sumner (DD-698) -class destroyer of the U.S. Navy and she was named for Commander William B. Ault, air group commander aboard USS Lexington. The destroyer was built by the Federal Shipbuilding and Dry-dock Company, Kearny, New Jersey. It was launched on 26th March 1944, sponsored by Mrs. Margaret Ault, Commander Ault's widow. Ault was commissioned on 31st May 1944, Commander Joseph C. Wylie in command. This warship got to participate in three major wars of that time: World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. From 12 to 23 February 1968, Ault participated in Operation Springboard in the San Juan operating area. The destroyer also participated in another Caribbean exercise, Operation Rugby-Match, a major fleet exercise which simulated a realistic air, surface, and subsurface threat environment. On 2nd September 1969, Ault sailed for the North Atlantic to take part in NATO’s exercise, Operation Peacekeeper. The ship was designated as a Naval Reserve training ship on 1st January 1970. Ault spent the next three years making training cruises in the Gulf of Mexico and in the Caribbean and was decommissioned on 16th July 1973, ending a career of twenty nine years of service. The destroyer earned five battle stars for her service in World War II and an additional two for her service off Vietnam. The main technical details of the warship are:
