The third ship of the United States Navy to bear the name of Ensign Worth Bagley who was an officer during the Spanish-American War. The ship was a Bagley-class destroyer and was laid down on 31st July 1935 at the Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Virginia. The warship was launched on 3rd September 1936 and commissioned on 12th June the next year and the Lieutenant Commander Earl W. Morris was the first in command. She activated during the inter-war period in Atlantic, at Pearl Harbor and then, during the Second World War the destroyer sailed to Oahu, joined the barrage of antiaircraft fire around Lexington. The ship was also assigned to Southwest Pacific Force and took part at the Operation Watchtower, the invasion of Guadalcanal. She participated at the Battle of the Philippine Sea screening the initial landing on Saipan during 1944. Bagley's only part in the Battle for Leyte Gulf was to join the ad hoc cruiser-destroyer group. The destroyer did not participate in the atomic tests, and reported for inactivation at Pearl Harbor on 2nd May. Decommissioned there on 13th June 1946, she was towed to San Diego for scrap sale. Her name was struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 25th February 1947, and she was sold on 8th September 1947. Here are the ship’s main characteristics as built:
USS Bagley was build using asbestos material. They have created a dangerous environment in the way that when damaged, these materials released airborne asbestos fibers. The people embarked swallow or inhale the resulting fibers causing, most of the time, serious health problems. It is very important, especially for former crew members of United States Navy ships, to have a complete exam. Do not forget to use appropriate prevention measures.
If you were exposed to asbestos on board Bagley you have to know that the law is on your side. Contact a specialized attorney after you have visited a doctor and received a complete diagnosis sheet. If you explain your situation to your lawyer and provide him with the necessary information and documents about what is known to be the „asbestos destroyer” he will then file the claim in your name. In this point you will be one step away from receiving an important amount as compensation, in order to pay for the most effective methods of available treatment.
