The third ship named after the Admiral Theodorus Bailey was a Benson – class Destroyer in the United States Navy during the World War II. The warship was launched on 19th December 1941 and commissioned on 11th May next year being sponsored by Mrs. Mary de Peyster Charles and the first in command was Lieutenant Commander F. D. Karns, Jr. and was reported to the Pacific Fleet. In the Pacific, the destroyer joined on a patrol in the Aleutian Island, took part in the Battle of the Komandorski Islands, then being injured returned to the Pearl Harbor. She acted as a fire support, picket, and patrol ship in the invasion of Tarawa, Maloelap and Kwajalein, Marshall Islands, Saipan and Tinian, Marianas Islands Peleliu and Angaur, Palau Islands. The ship also supported landings and between august and November 1945 she was engaged in training in Far Eastern waters. On 11th December 1945 she became inactive and went out of commission in reserve at Charleston, South Carolina on 2nd May 1946. She was stricken for the Naval Vessel Register on 1st June 1968.
