USS BARNEY DD 149 DESTROYER

The Wickes-class destroyer from the United States Navy activated during the Second World War. The second ship to bear the name for Commodore Joshua Barney was later re- designated (AG 113). She was launched on 5th September 1918 in Pennsylvania being sponsored by Miss Nannie Dornin Barney, great-granddaughter of Commodore Barney. She was commissioned on 14th March 1919 and the first in command was Lieutenant Commander J. L. Kauffman. After activating in the Atlantic Fleet she went out of commission on 30th June 1922. Being decommissioned on 1st May eight years later she operated on the east coast of the Caribbean. On 18th September 1942 she had a collision with Greer resulting in severe damage and human loss. In March 1945, she was assigned to TE 25 and engaged in training exercises with submarines in Long Island and Block Island Sounds. On 30th June 1945, her classification was changed to AG-113. The destroyer was decommissioned 30th November 1945 and sold on 13th October 1946. The main characteristics of the destroyer as built are:

  • A maximum speed of 35 knots
  • 133 officers and enlisted served on board
  • Barney received one battle star for her escort of Convoy UOS 37.
