The second ship to bear the name for Rear Admiral John Kennedy Barton was an Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer. This ship was launched on 10th October 1943 and was sponsored by Miss Barbara Dean Barton, granddaughter of Admiral Barton. Being commissioned on 30th December 1943, the first in command was Commander J. W. Callahan. The destroyer activated during the Second World War and participated at the invasion of Normandy, she took part at the capture of Leyte, Iwo Jima invasion, Okinawa invasion, and the 3rd Fleet raids on Japan. In the post-war period, in 1945, she participated in Operation Crossroads. She was placed out of commission on 22nd January 1947 until 11th of April 1949 when she was re-commissioned and joined the Destroyer Division 201. In April 1965 she became flagship in its home port of Philadelphia. During her remaining years in commission, USS Barton (DD-722) operated primarily between Philadelphia, Norfolk, and Guantanamo Bay. In August 1968, a board of inspection and survey determined the destroyer to be beyond economical repair. The destroyer was decommissioned on 30th September 1968, and her name struck from the Navy list on 1st October 1968. She was sunk as a target on 8th October 1969.
