Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer, otherwise known to the general public as colon cancer, is the asbestos-related disease in which cancerous tumor and tissue develops near the rectum, colon and appendix. Experts say that colorectal cancer is the third most common type of cancer, killing over half a million people each year.

Colorectal cancer caused by asbestos exposure

As was the case with breast cancer, doctors and experts do not have the certainty that colorectal rectal cancer is linked to asbestos exposure, although recent studies have shown to increase the risk of developing it. A very comprehensive study conducted recently showed that over 35 percent of the studied people that were found with high asbestos fiber concentration developed or were already suffering from colon cancer.

Colorectal cancer symptoms

Symptoms of colorectal cancer depend largely on the exact location of the tumor. If it located closer to the anus the patient will experience a change in the normal bowel activity, together with minor pain and discomfort. A smoker will encounter more problems at this stage.

Colorectal cancer staging

There are several stages to the development of colorectal cancer. Different from mesotheioma or lung cancer because it uses another staging system, colorectal is split into the following:

  • Stage 0 – tumor confined to mucosa
  • Stage I – The tumor is growing in size and extended the reach
  • Stage II – the tumor invades near organs and the visceral peritoneum
  • Stage III – Metastatic development begins and can spread quickly
  • Stage IV – final stage, usually metastasis development is extreme and people reaching this stage have 6 months to live, at most

Colorectal cancer treatment

Colorectal cancer is treated with the same basic methods used for all other types of cancer. They differ slightly, depending on certain aspects. Chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy are the basic ways cancer can be treated. Although many colon cancer patients survive this disease, the best treatment remains prevention of this disease.

Path physiology of colorectal cancer and screening methods help doctors understand how the cancer evolves and what type of treatment would be the most efficient way of attacking the cancerous tissue. These are basic methods of determining how to treat a specific patient.

Colorectal cancer statistics

As mentioned in the first lines of this article, colorectal or colon cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. It is also one of the few cancer types that can be cured with appropriate treatment.
