The USS Forrest Sherman (DD-931) was the lead ship of her class of destroyers, laid down in 1953, launched, and commissioned in 1955. After a year of initial training and outfitting, the vessel sailed on training and fleet exercises along the East Coast and in the Caribbean in 1957. To prepare for her first deployment to the Mediterranean, the destroyer completed amphibious exercises off Puerto Rico in 1958. She sailed to join the 7th Fleet in its operations off Taiwan in support of the threatened islands of Quemoy. A year later, the destroyer joined in Operation Inland Seas, serving as an escort ship. In the following period, she took part in coastal exercises with the Atlantic Fleet, then underwent minor repairs and alterations. In 1960, the vessel embarked on a 7-month cruise to the Mediterranean and was deployed with the 6th Fleet. She then entered the Boston Naval Shipyard for a major overhaul, which lasted into 1961. The USS Forrest Sherman was decommissioned in 1982 and stricken from the Register in 1990.
