Located in Harvey, Louisiana, the shipyard was founded in 1935 under the name Gretna Machine & Iron Works. In 1981, it was acquired from Dixie Carriers by Trinity Marine Group. People who were employed at Gretna Shipyard during the last century were heavily exposed to asbestos, particularly insulators. Asbestos is a human carcinogen, being able to cause life-threatening diseases such as mesothelioma and lung cancer within 20 to 50 years of the first exposure. Workers who had to cut and sand building products were inhaling asbestos dust on a regular basis, as these tasks would inevitably release a lot of toxic dust into the air.
