Moss Point Marine Shipyard Areas With Asbestos Exposure

Moss Point Marine Shipyard was established in 1978. When it became essential to enter into government contracts in 1987, the shipyard was sold to Trinity Industries, since obtaining performance guarantees for a small, privately held shipyard was difficult. At the time, asbestos was prized for its resistance to heat, chemicals, and fire. These characteristics made it perfect for insulating electrical wires, pipes, brake pads, and boilers, among other items. Due to the fact that the vessels that were already in service continued to be used for many years after manufacture ceased, many Navy veterans were exposed to asbestos long beyond the 1970s. Veterans and civilians who used to work at this shipyard may have been exposed to asbestos, which can cause severe pulmonary conditions.
