USS Allioth (AK-109) Areas With Asbestos Exposure

USS Allioth (AK-109)

The USS Allioth was a Crater-class ship. Its main function was that of a cargo vessel. This ship served the US Navy in the operations of World War II. The USS Allioth had different duties: delivering cargo, troops, and equipment. It was commissioned on the 25th of October in Portland, Oregon, under the command of George F. Prestwich. It traveled to places such as the Marshall Islands, the Gilbert Islands, Tarawa, Peleliu, Palau Islands, and others. In 1944 the vessel was converted into an Aviation Supply Issue Ship and started supporting aircraft in the Philippine Islands and the Ryukyu Islands. The USS Allioth was decommissioned in 1946 and placed in the National Defense Reserve Fleet at Suisun Bay, California.

There were over 300 asbestos-containing materials used in building the USS Alioth. Due to their affordability, tensile strength, and resistance they were used in nearly every part of the ship, being good insulation, fireproofing, and building material. Exposure to asbestos aboard naval vessels caused many veterans to later develop mesothelioma and other serious asbestos-related conditions.
