USS Sagittarius (AKN-2) Areas With Asbestos Exposure

USS Sagittarius (AKN-2)

The USS Sagittarius (AKN-2) was an Indus-class net cargo ship laid down on November 8, 1943, and launched on November 30, the same year. It was commissioned on March 18, 1944, and served in the US Navy for 2 years until it was decommissioned on January 16, 1946. During its activity, the ship carried a complement of 228 men on board and had its main missions in Norfolk, Okinawa, the Marianas, Pearl Harbor, Mare Island, Hawaii, and Ryukyus. After decommissioning, the ship was struck from the Navy List on February 7, 1946. For the services brought to the country during World War II, the USS Sagittarius received 2 battle stars. Asbestos has a dangerous reputation and for good reason, when disturbed, asbestos fibers break loose and are released into the air. These fibers are tiny and invisible to the naked eye, roughly 10x smaller than the width of a human hair. Breakaway asbestos fibers can then be inhaled and cause damage to your respiratory system.
