USS Trathen (DD-530) Areas With Asbestos Exposure

USS Trathen (DD-530)

Built in 1942, the USS Trathen was a Fletcher-class destroyer that served in the U.S. Navy between 1943 and 1946, as well as between 1951 and 1965. It was laid down by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation in San Francisco in 1942 and sponsored by Mrs. Cassin Young, the wife of Captain Cassin Young, who was awarded the Medal of Honor as commanding officer of the USS Vestal (AR-4) during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

People who were present aboard this ship need to pay close attention to their health, as they were heavily exposed to asbestos. Military ships built during the last century were laden with asbestos, particularly in the form of insulation, which made exposure inevitable. Therefore, if you are a veteran who served on the USS Trathen and experience unusual symptoms, we strongly advise you to seek medical attention. In 1973, the ship was used as a target hulk and subsequently scrapped.

Everyone who served on the USS Trathen (DD-530) inhaled the asbestos fibers and is at risk for developing lung disease
